Charles Paul ‘Charlie’ Johns, age 72, of Cridersville died 1:41 p.m., Friday Feb. 7 at Lima Memorial Health Systems. He was born June 3, 1941 at home in Lima to Melvin Sylvester and Aritta Viola Boham Johns, who preceded him in death. He married Lela Myers June 3, 1961 who survives in Lima.
Mr. Johns taught Chemistry and Physics at both Bath and Spencerville Schools, then received his MBA from Bowling Green State University. He became a Certified Quality Engineer (CGE) and spent much of his career working with Westinghouse, Copeland, and Gould before retiring from the United States Department of Defense. Charlie was known for his decades of volunteer work at Lima Memorial Hospital, culminating in more than 15,000 hours spent helping others.
Additional survivors include a son: Scott (Jennifer) Johns of Newcomerstown, OH, 2 daughters: Dr. Bonnie (Mark) McNamara of Lima and Tammie (Robert) Hursh of Bluffton, daughter-in-law Kim Johns of Wapak, 8 grandchildren: David, Elizabeth, and Katie McNamara, Nathan & Madison Hursh and Matthew, Zach and Claire Johns and a brother: William (Barb) Johns of Butler, Ohio. He was preceded in death by his son Mark Johns and his granddaughter Samantha.
The family will receive friends 2-4 p.m., Monday Feb. 10 at Bayliff & Son Funeral Home, Cridersville. A memorial service will follow at 4 with Pastor Don Nichols officiating. Burial of cremated remains will be in St. Matthew Cemetery at a later date.
Memorial contributions may be given to Lima Memorial Volunteer Program care of the Auxiliary.
