Dale Lee Wheeler, age 63 of Ft. Myers, Florida passed away at 1:40am on Thursday, April 2, 2015 at Lee Memorial Hospital in Ft. Myers, Florida. Dale was born January 16, 1952 in Lima, Ohio to the late Imogene Vernon Wheeler and Robert William Wheeler Sr. whom survives in Lima. Dale is survived by four children, Adam Carolus (Stephanie) of Lima, Stacey Ryan (Terry) of Centennial, Colorado, Brandan Wheeler (Holly) of Dayton, Ohio and Tyson Wheeler of Lima and 16 grandchildren. Dale is also survived by six brothers and sisters, Robert William Wheeler Jr (Leare) of Cape Coral, FL, Linda Jessup (Terry) of Shidler, OKlahoma, Fred Wheeler Sr. (Karen) of Lima, Joel Wheeler (Carol) of Lima, Karen Williams (Larry) of Dublin, Ohio and Cindi Fox (Brian) of Columbus, Ohio. Dale is also survived by three step sisters and one step brother, Susan Moore McKay of Tampa, FL, Diana McConnell (Steve) of Lima, Sandra Gessler of Wapakoneta and Jim Moore of Clermont, FL.
Dale was a 1970 graduate of Shawnee High School, where he was a captain and three time varsity letterman in football, basketball and track. Dale was awarded the Golden Helmet Award, All City Player of the Year and Running Back of the Year. Dale received a four year scholarship to play football with the Kent State Golden Flashes alongside teammates Jack Lambert, Nick Saban and Gary Pinkel. Dale’s team became the 1972 MAC 10 Champions and played against Tampa in the January 1973 Tangerine Bowl. Dale also received The Most Improved Player Award for 1973. Dale graduated from Kent State University in 1974 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education. Dale’s teaching career included Bryan City Schools in Bryan, Ohio, Shawnee Schools in Lima and Midway/Homestead Schools in Crossville, TN. Dale also coached high school wrestling and football during his career. When Dale moved to Florida, he was a Department Manager at Lowe’s Home Improvement stores in Palatka and Ft. Myers, Florida. Dale was highly valued as a manager at Lowe’s because he walked into work every day with a smile on his face and Dale’s upbeat attitude was contagious with the other associates. This is what will be remembered most about Dale, he always knew how to make you laugh or put on a smile on your face. We will miss that smile & laugh dearly!
The family will receive friends Friday, May 1st 2:00pm-4:00pm and 6:00pm-8:00pm at Bayliff & Son Funeral Home at 311 West Main Street Cridersville, Ohio.
