Darryl Quay, age 64 of Lima, died at 7:16 a.m., Wednesday, December 29, 2010 in St. Rita’s Medical Center, Lima. He was born October 15, 1946 in Toledo, Ohio. He is the son of Vernon E. Quay and Mildred Lucille Felton Quay Houghton. His father is deceased and his mother survives in Toledo. On June 21, 1970 he married Cheryl A. Kindle, who survives.
Mr. Quay had recently been a substitute custodian with the Shawnee School System. He was a member of St. Paul’s United Church of Christ in Ada. Previously he had volunteered with the Cerebral Palsy Clinic at Lima Memorial Health Care System. He graduated from Ohio Northern University with a Bachelor degree in music education. Darryl volunteered with the Shawnee School Libraries where he learned the Dewey Decimal System and received the JC Penney Volunteer of the Year Award now named the Jefferson Awards.
He had been a band director at Botkin Schools and later was an instrumental music instructor the Lima City Schools, specializing in double reeds. He was one of the founding members of the Lima Area Concert Bands in which he was very active in and also a member of the Lima Symphony Orchestra. He was very passionate about music and the power it plays in peoples lives.
He was known for being a jokester, mischievous, but a very hard worker. Darryl was always willing and wanting to help people, and loved to give and share with others. Family, friends, and time spent with them were very special and important to him.
Mr. Quay is survived by a daughter – Megan Ann Quay of Lima; 2 step brothers – Paul D. (Diana) Werner of Florida and Rev. Roger D. (Ginni) Quay of Lancaster, Ohio.
Funeral services will begin 11:30 a.m., Monday, January 3, 2011 in Bayliff & Son Funeral Home, Cridersville. The Rev. Roger D. Quay will officiate. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery, Ada.
The family will receive friends from 2:00 – 4:00 and 6:00 – 8:00 p.m., Sunday at the funeral home.
