Donald E. Smith, age 78 of rural Wapakoneta, passed peacefully surrounded by his family at 10:31 p.m., Monday, March 14, 2016 at St. Rita’s Medical Center. He was born November 17, 1937 in Lima, Allen County; to the late William H. and Ethel J. Barrett Smith. On February 15, 1957 he married Joyce Ann Deardurff, who survives.

Mr. Smith was retired from sales, he was a 1955 graduate of Cridersville High School, and member of St. Paul United Church of Christ. He treasured time spent with family, loved fishing, farming, playing cards, and collecting toys.

He is survived by 3 children – Debra A. Poeppelman of Wapakoneta; Kenneth E. (Tammy) Smith of Ottawa; Dennis L. (Dee) Smith of Wapakoneta; 8 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; a brother – Dale Smith of Wapakoneta; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a son-in-law – Fred Poeppelman who died 2010 and a sister-in-law – Vera Smith.

Funeral services will begin 10:30 a.m., Saturday, March 19, 2016 at Bayliff & Son Funeral Home, Cridersville. Rev. Rebecca Sunday will officiate. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery, Wapakoneta.

The family will receive friends from 2:00 – 4:00 and 6:00 – 8:00 p.m., Friday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul United Church of Christ or to the family.
