Donald L. McDonald, age 82 of Celina and formerly of Lima, died at 7:05 a.m., Thursday, November 11, 2010 in The Gardens at Celina. He was born November 28, 1927 in Lima, Ohio. He is the son of Harry John and Roberta Hellen Higgins McDonald. Both parents are deceased. On March 21, 1954 he married Carol June Youngquist who died September 20, 1985. On February 26, 1988 he then married Christine H. Bender Ley, who survives in Celina.
Other survivors include a son – James J. (Merrit) McDonald of Pickney, Michigan; a daughter – Cheryl S. (David) Slack of Marion, Ohio; 4 step sons – Thomas J. (Violet) Ley of Waterville, Ohio ; Kenneth E. (Victoria) Ley of Clermont, Florida; Keith J. (Gwen) Ley of Celina; Gerald J. “Jerry” (Michelle) Ley of Celina; 2 step daughters – Janet E. Ley (David) Pike of Celina; Joyce A. (Alan) Westgerdes of Coldwater; 4 grandchildren; 17 step grandchildren; 21 step great grandchildren; a sister – Mary Ward (Norman) Walker of Grand Rapids, Michigan; a step daughter-in-law – Mary Ley Harting of Convoy, Ohio; a brother-in-law – Robert Bowersock of Buckland.
He is preceded in death by a step son Richard C. Ley; a step grandson; a step great grandson; a brother – Robert McDonald and 3 sisters – Adeline Marshall, Dorothy Bowersock, and Hellen Elwood.
Mr. McDonald was a retired letter carrier with the U.S. Postal Service, Lima branch. He had received his 60 year pin from the National Association of Letter Carriers. He was a patron member of the Celina Veteran of Foreign Wars Post and the American Legion in Celina. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles of Celina. He believed in participating in charitable projects, like driving a blind boy back and forth to Columbus about once a month for several years. He loved his family and enjoyed traveling.
Funeral services will begin 10:00 a.m., Monday, November 15, 2010 Bayliff & Son Funeral Home, Cridersville. The Rev. Doug Meyer will officiate. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery, Lima.
The family will receive friends from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m., Sunday, November 14, at the funeral home.
