Earl E. Lockwood, age 84 of Lima, died 7:55 a.m., Wednesday, September 1, 2010, at Cridersville Health Care. He was born November 8, 1925 in Wells County, Indiana. He was the son of Edwin and Iva Lavina Dyson Lockwood. Both parents are deceased. He had formerly been married to Caroline E. Kuder, who survives in Bloomington, Indiana.
Mr. Lockwood was owner and operator of Lost Creek Nursery and Fruit Market. He graduated in 1943 from Lima Central High School, and formerly owned Elida Road Fruit Market. He had been the youngest realtor in the state of Ohio and had worked in 1947 with Lockwood Realty. He had been instrumental in the planning and appraising of I-75, the Allen County Airport, and the Ohio State University, Lima campus. He had operated the Auglaize County Credit Bureau and had taught at Apollo. He had been legally blind but continued to read the paper until about 2 weeks ago. He was very proud of his children and grandchildren, whom he treasured.
He was a nature lover, very knowledgeable, had been called a walking encyclopedia, and loved telling a good story. He appreciated visiting with people and playing the piano. He will be remembered for being a jokester, his great sense of humor, and being a hard worker. His hobby was his vocation which he continued as long as he was able.
He is survived by his companion Anna B. Selfridge of Lima, children – Marcia E. Cole of Burlington, Kentucky; Robert “Bob” A.(Janice) Lockwood of Lima; Laura J.(Michael) Lugibihl of Elida; 6 grandchildren – Alicia, Christy, Emily, Alexander, Faith, and Jacob Lugibihl; 3 step- grandchildren – Donald Miller, Danielle Thompson, and Douglas Miller; 5 step great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother – Dale (Dorothy who survives in Cridersville) Lockwood and a sister – Fern (Eugene) Hoverman.
Funeral services will begin 10:30 a.m., Friday, September 3, 2010, in Bayliff & Son Funeral Home, Cridersville. Pastor Neighbors will officiate. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery, Lima.
The family will receive friends from 2:00 – 4:00 and 6:00 – 8:00 p.m., Thursday, September 2, 2010, and from 9:00 a.m. until time of services Friday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be given to the Allen County 4-H, Boy Scouts of America, or to the Master Gardeners of Lima.
