Ed Conrad passed from this earth to his heavenly home on February 14, 2013 at the age of 85 to join his wife, Marilyn Marie (Swaney) Conrad. He was born in Lima, Ohio on January 5, 1928 to Edmund L. Conrad and M. Marie (Chapman) Conrad. He was raised on the family farm on Schooler Road. He attended Perry School, which at that time, only had nine grades. He graduated from Shawnee High School in 1946. Ed then joined the United States Army, serving in the 511th Airborne from May 1946 to October 1947. He served over a year of his enlisted time in Sapporo, Japan. He shared stories of being a SSM1 rifle parachutist and glider, jumping from dangerously low altitudes fully equipped. He was decorated with a WWII Victory Medal and an Army of Occupation Medal Japan.
Ed is survived by four generations: sons Jim (Chris) Conrad and Joe (Roxanne) Conrad, and daughters Janelle (Rock) Taviano and Sally (Jim) Scherrer. His grandchildren include: granddaughters Jenny (James) Farler, Lori (Andrew) Brooks, Shauna (GW) Finch, Erin (Beau) Kessler; and grandsons Jimmy (Kendra) Conrad, Mike (Kristen) Conrad, Gabe (Marla) Taviano, and Tug (Angie) Taviano. Great grandchildren are: Ethan and Chase Farler, Savana, Brady, and Bryson Brooks, Cayden Conrad, Will and Sarah Kessler, Livi, Ava, and Nina Taviano, and Morgan, Reese, and Tanner Taviano. Ed is also survived by his sister-in-laws, Letha (John) Conrad and Margaret Lotz and brother-in-law Dr. Gilbert (Ella Mary) Spencer. He has many nephews and nieces as well. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marilyn, his parents Ed and Marie Conrad, his mother and father-in-law Walter and Hattie Belle Swaney, his brother John Conrad and sister Ella Mary (Conrad) Spencer, his brothers-in-law Russell (Kathryn) and Gerald Swaney and his sister-in-law Wauneta Swaney.
Early in his adult life, Ed worked for the Lima Telephone and Telegraph Company. He was also a postal carrier for the United States Postal Service.
Ed served his community in many capacities and for an extensive period of time as a member of the Perry School Board, the Allen County School Board, the Perry Volunteer Fire Department, and as a Perry Township Trustee. Ed was a member of the Ohio Farm Bureau. He and Marilyn were members of Grace Baptist Church. Ed was always there to help a neighbor whether it was to plow snow or lend his tractor.
Ed loved farming. It was his passion in life. He enjoyed the planting, the care of the crops, and the harvest. One of the most difficult days of his life was when he was told he could no longer drive his tractor. He was always watching the weather to know the best time to apply fertilizer, to plant, or to harvest. He loved the daily work, as well as reading the farm magazines, taking drives to see how others’ crops were doing, and talking the farm talk.
There will be a memorial service to honor Ed on April 5, 2013 at 10:00 AM at Grace Baptist Church, 1097 Fett Rd, Lima, OH 45801. The burial service will be at Fairmount Cemetery near Uniopolis.
Contributions can be made to the Perry Fire Department or Grace Baptist Church Parking Lot Fund.
