Chief Rick miller left a message on January 16, 2020:
To Ann and Family, We express our deepest condolences in this time of sorrow. Gene was a great friend to myself and the members of our Department. Many of our members received Gene's guidance and training and are better Firefighters for it. He was especially important to myself whenever I was investigating a Fire, Gene was my guidance and mentor if I had questions. Our area was blessed to have such a person that cared so much about whatever he was involved in and the people he was working with. Farewell my friend, "Adios"Chief Rick Miller and the Members of the Cridersville Vol. Fire Co. Inc.

To: Ann and the rest of the familyOur heartfelt sorrow for the loss of Gene. He was my friend and a respected colleague. Gene constantly gave of his time, energy and expertise to the community he served so well and they will certainly miss him. I will also miss my friend with his wry humor, sage wisdom, and sound judgement. I was fortunate to have spoken with Gene a couple of times in the last month and he had told me that he had been having some serious health issues but the news of his passing was an unanticipated shock. Ann, I'm sorry that Jenny and I cannot be there to speak with you in person but we are in Florida for the season (something Gene was constantly kidding me about). We will be making donations to both the Perry and Westminster Fire Departments in Gene's memory as I believe he would have wished. With deepest feelings,Dave & Jenny Webb
