Floyd Eugene “Whitey” Gross, age 88, passed away at 1:26 p.m. on Wednesday, February 22, 2023 in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Floyd was a life-long resident of Wapakoneta, Ohio until December of 2018. He was born on October 30, 1934, in Auglaize County to Floyd and Hazel (Clark) Gross.
Floyd married Helen L. (Miller) on July 23, 1955. Helen, who survives, was the love of his life as they celebrated over 67 years of marriage. Floyd was an honorable man and will be remembered for his sense of humor, and devotion and love for his family.
Whitey was preceded in death by two brothers, Ronald (Erma) Gross and Donald (Earlene) Gross. He is survived by two daughters, K. Jayne Numbers of Ft. Wayne, Indiana and Tammy J. Bush of Cridersville, Ohio. Floyd was blessed with nine grandchildren: Justin Bush, Jared (Lynnea) Numbers, Jamin (Lindsey) Bush, Andrea (Tiffany) Numbers, Jordan (Eden) Numbers, Adrienne Numbers, Ashley (Omar) Bass, Amy (Shanna) Numbers, and Joshua (Cierra) Numbers. Floyd is survived by twelve great grandchildren: Felicity Numbers, Akiva Numbers, Silas Numbers, Tahlia Numbers, Kendrick Lee, Judah Numbers, Jakobi Numbers, Leviticus Bass, Zain Bass, Uriel Bass, Hazel Numbers and Ezra Numbers. Floyd is also survived by his brother Norman ‘Bud’ (Randi) Gross of Las Vegas, Nevada.
Floyd served in the United States Army from 1955 to 1957. He was stationed in Germany and was assigned to the Atomic Cannon. He was nominated to serve as National Honor Guard for President Eisenhower. Floyd, a truck driver, retired from Van Waters & Rogers of Ft. Wayne, Indiana. He hauled hazardous chemicals and celebrated a safe driving record during his employment of 32 years. Following retirement, Floyd enjoyed working as a seasonal employee with the Wapakoneta City Schools.
Funeral services will begin at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, February 25 at Bayliff and Son Funeral Home in Cridersville, Ohio with Pastor Brandon Green officiating. Burial will follow with military rites in Fairmount Cemetery near Uniopolis. Family and friends may call from 11:30 until the time of service at the funeral home.
In Lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
