George Harlan Stearley, age 95 of Sidney and formerly of Lima, died at 11:37 p.m., Wednesday, September 9, 2015 at The Pavilion Health Facility in Sidney.
He was born June 17, 1920 in Washington Township, Clay County, Indiana; to the late John and Bertha Brown Stearley. On June 30, 1946 he married Charlotte V. Bowles, who survives in Sidney.
Mr. Stearley graduated from Rose Polytechnic Institute in Terre Haute, IN, and was a retired electrical engineer with Westinghouse Electric Corporation, Aerospace Division. He was an active member of the Shawnee Community United Methodist Church, a member of the Lima Management Club, and the Lima Elks Lodge #54. Mr. Stearley was a very patriotic American, having proudly served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during WWII, in both Greenland and the Philippines. He was a life member of the V.F.W. Post 1275 and the American Legion Post #96 of Lima.
George enjoyed traveling, gardening, ballroom dancing, and sports. He spent a lot of time in his workshop and was proud of the gifts he made for his family.
Survivors include 2 sons – John S. (Kristina) Stearley of Bloomington, IN; Dennis A. (Pattie) Stearley of Sidney; a daughter – Janet Kay (James) Rosenberg of Medford, NJ; 6 grandchildren; 2 step grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren, and 2 step great grand children.
He was preceded in death by a sister – Mabel Ruth Stearley Knox.
Funeral services will begin 4:00 p.m., Sunday, September 13, 2015 at Shawnee Community United Methodist Church. Bryan Bucher will be officiating.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to services.
Burial will be in St. John’s United Church of Christ Cemetery in Center Point, Indiana. Military rites will be observed.
