Ida May Head died at the age of 96 on Thursday, September 16, 2021. Born June 19, 1925, in Detroit, Michigan to Anthony A. Furton and Leontine M. (née Rochon) Furton, Ida was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and homemaker.
An extraverted, charming woman with a good sense of humor, she made friends easily and maintained several close, lifelong friendships (Bernice, Sharon, and Marion). In her early married life, she enjoyed owning thoroughbred racehorses while living in New Orleans, where her husband worked for a NASA contractor during the early space program. While living there she often delighted in 1 a.m. glazed doughnuts from The Verbena Bakery in Gentilly Woods and coffee and beignets at Café du Monde.
After her husband transferred to the Lima Army Tank Plant as Chief of Manufacturing Support, Ida raised her granddaughter, Shannon, and enjoyed spending time with children by volunteering for the Brownies and the Shawnee Band Boosters. Dedicated to the betterment of community, Ida was also a passionate volunteer in politics and environmental protection. Her fondest nature adventure was whitewater rafting on Class I-III rapids on the New River. She also enjoyed family vacations to Myrtle Beach. Fascinated by Hispanic history, culture, and language, Ida traveled internationally to Spain and hoped one day to visit the Incan city of Machu Picchu.
Rooted in the Catholic faith, she was a parishioner of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Lima.
She was preceded in death by her late husband, Dudley L. Head, Jr., her son, Stephen B. Head, her brother Edward B. Furton, and her sisters, Deloris Ann Barber (Ralph Alfred), Marie Helen Bostwick (Frank Bruce).
Ida will be lovingly remembered by her daughter, Sandra L. Bohle; her three grandchildren Shannon Bohle, Kelly Bowers (Brian), and Christopher Head; and her great-grandson Brandon Bowers.
She was remembered in the intentions for the weekend Masses on Saturday, September 25th at 5 p.m., Sunday, September 26th at 8 a.m., 10:30 a.m., and 5:30 p.m. at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Lima, Ohio.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to one of the following: Ida M. Head Memorial Fund at Bayliff & Son Funeral Home in Cridersville – https://bayliffandson.com/funeral-cremation/family-pay/, Ohio; St. Jude Shrine in Baltimore, Maryland; or Angels for Veterans in Celina, Ohio.
