Obituary

Ira Clayton McConnell, age 86 of Lima, died peacefully at 9:00 a.m., Sunday, January 1, 2012 in Shawnee Manor. He was born March 3, 1925 in Allen County, Ohio; the son of Wilbur C. and Beatrice Coon McConnell. Both parents are deceased. He celebrated 65 years of marriage with Arletha ‘Lee’ Fox McConnell, who survives in Lima.

Mr. McConnell retired after 30 years with Army Tank Plant/ General Dynamics. He was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church. He graduated from Shawnee High School and then joined the U.S. Navy. He was a proud member of the Elks lodge #54 of Lima; Knights of Columbus, Tamarac Golf Club, and spent many years with the Lima Men’s Bowling Association.

He loved working outside on his lawn and with his roses. He took a lot of pride in his gardening, making everything beautiful and delicious. Other favorite hobbies included golfing and bowling. He was one of his daughter’s biggest bowling fans. He was a carpenter too and built the home in which he and his wife spent many years.

He was adored by his wife, of whom he had loving admiration for. He was a great and giving man who loved life and people.

Other survivors include a daughter – Cathy Jo (Kevin) Grumblis of Lima; 3 granddaughters – Renee Grumblis; Kristin (Ryan) Armakovitch; Stephanie Grumblis; 2 great granddaughters – Ava Louise and Sophia Renee; a sister Mary Mitchell of Lima.

He was preceded in death by 3 brothers – Harold E. ‘Mac’ McConnell, Norman McConnell; William A. McConnell; and a sister – Ruth Yarnell.

Mass of Christian Burial will begin 1:30 p.m., Thursday at St. John’s Catholic Church, Lima. The Father David Ross will officiate. Burial will follow in Gethsemani Cemetery, Lima.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m., Wednesday at Bayliff & Son Funeral Home, Cridersville.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. John’s Catholic Church, Angel’s for Animals/Humane Society, St. Rita’s Oncology, or The Leukemia Society.
