Jacqueline Sue ‘Jackie’ Fitzgerald, age 72 of Lima, died at 6:47 p.m., Wednesday, August 24, 2016 at her residence with her sons by her side after a courageous battle with cancer. Jackie was born December 10th, 1943 in Auglaize County, Ohio to the late George and Betty Reed Market.
Jackie was a graduate of Shawnee High School, working in her early years at The Lima News where she met her husband John E. ‘Jack’ Fitzgerald. Jackie was an avid tennis player in the 1970’s, 80’s, and 90’s, playing mostly at Westside Swim and Racquet Club. She and Jack enjoyed playing poker for years and as many people who sat across from her at the poker table will attest, they could not believe the cards she was dealt and how well she played them.
Jackie dealt with her latest cancer diagnoses much like Jack did his, “these are the cards I was dealt, this is the hand I have to play”. In her final months she enjoyed time at the casino in Toledo. She was a wonderful mother and caring friend. She loved visiting with friends and she dearly loved her family. She would worry about others, laugh and love even on those rough health days when all she wanted to do was rest. She loved her four legged buddies, Bonsai and Diego.
Jackie is survived by two sons, Jeff (Kim) Fitzgerald of McGuffey/Alger, Kevin Fitzgerald at home; sisters Sandra Greynolds (Mike) Little of Lima; Sharon Dengamal of Lima; Georgia (Stanton) O’Neal of Lima; Cheryl Focht of Texas; Kathy (Ken) Kern of Florida; Pam (Ed) Bush of Lima and brother Mike Warrens of Lima; many nieces and nephews, those close to her, Justin and Brittany O’Neal; Tracy Harris, Kathy, Ann (Walker) Kennedy, and Mike Walker and the entire Koehler clan, Nan, Jeff, Chris, Kathy, and Kerry; a special great niece, Bree O’Neal; great nephews, Tyler McComb and Trey Harris; two grandsons – Dylan Cole and his daughter – Patiance Cole; Blake (Beth) Cole and their children, Jaelyn, Elijah, and Sophia; also a special friend and caregiver Deb Inman.
Jackie was preceded in death by husband Jack, Daughter Bridget, a brother, Jerry Market. Her parents George Market; Betty and Ed Warrens; her father and mother-in-law, Paul and Marguerite Fitzgerald; brother and sister-in-laws, Jack and Rita Koehler and Jim and Janet Walker.
The family would like to thank Dr. Henry Gerad and Dr. David Powell for their care over the years. Also St. Rita’s Hospice and Comfort Keepers.
If Jackie could give a cautionary tale, it would be this. If you are going to be in the sun for any period of time, apply sunscreen! Her many years in the sun finally caught up with her and if her situation can save anyone from going through what she did, she would be happy.
Per Jackie’s wishes, there will be no public visitation or funeral services. Her cremated remains will be buried at a later date.
Memorial donations in Jackie’s memory can be sent to Deb’s Dogs or Angels for Animals.
