James E. ‘Jim’ Cowan, age 71 of Lima, died at 7:59 p.m., Tuesday, May 2, 2017 at Lima Memorial Health Care System. He was born June 17, 1945 in Lima, Ohio to the late Edward T. and Beulah M. Bowsher Cowan. In January 1966 he married Fern A. Gudakunst, who survives in Lima.
After graduating Shawnee High School in 1963, Jim went to the Ohio State Barber College and upon graduating, worked at Elmview Barber Shop for 9 years. During this time he joined the U. S. Army Reserve. In 1973 he began he career at Ford Motor Company, Lima Engine Plant where he continued working for over 31 years. He had formerly been a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church and then attended the Shawnee Alliance Church.
Jim was very sports minded and a huge sports fan. He began playing dart ball at St. Matthew and then going on to play for Botkins. He later played softball and was proud to coach his sons soccer and baseball teams. A favorite hobby was playing corn hole, teaching his grandson, Ben to play and entering tournaments with him. He enjoyed hunting morel mushroom and raccoons with his father and friends.
He is also survived by 2 sons – James P. (Mirna) Cowan of Florida; Jeffrey S. (Phillis) Cowan of Lima; 4 grandchildren – Ben Cowan, Alex Cowan, Steven Hawkey, and Raul Fernandez; a brother – Jon T. (Elise) Cowan of Lima; 2 sisters – Maxine (Darrell) Barnes of Cridersville; Rowena A. (Edmond) Terry of Pataskala, OH; and his beloved pet Buddy.
The family will receive friends from 2:00 – 6:00 p.m., Sunday, May 7, 2017 at Bayliff & Son Funeral Home, Cridersville; and from 10:00 -11:00 a.m., Monday at the church.
Funeral services will begin 11:00 a.m., Monday, May 8, 2017 at Shawnee Alliance Church, 4455 Shawnee Road, Lima. Rev. Shane Crites will officiate. Burial will follow in St. Matthew Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the donor’s choice.
