John J. Altenburger, 93, of Wapakoneta died 9:35 a.m., Thursday July 28 at the Wapakoneta Manor. He was born Nov. 20, 1922 in Auglaize County to the late John Joseph and Leona Miller Altenburger. His war bride Winnie Altenburger survives here in Wapak and he later married Beverly Joyce Hahn and she preceded him in death.
Prior to the war John was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps. John had served in multiple theaters during WW II in the Army Air Corp and was a member of the Wapak V. F. W. and American Legion. He belonged to St. Joseph Parish, enjoyed fishing going to car shows and loved to dance. He was a 75 year member of Eagles Aerie 691 and had served as president in 1953. In 1949 became an Auxiliary Highway Patrolman, worked with the Wapak Police Dept. in 1965 and was a special fireman with the Wapak Fire Department in 1973. He was known by many for owning a Standard Oil Service Station and more recently for his adventures on his golf cart in downtown Wapak.
Survivors include daughters Tina Marie (Shawn) Morman of Lima and Judy (Chuck) Miller of Springfield, 7 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren, brothers-in-law Louis W. Hahn of Wapak and Norman (Kathy) Hahn of Beaverdam, sisters-in-law Linda Hertenstein of Wapak and Judy Dickman of Lima along with several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a brother Richard Altenburger.
A gathering will be held Friday Aug. 5 from 4 to 4:30 p.m. at Bayliff & Son Funeral Home, Cridersville. Father Pat Slonaker will have a memorial service at 4:30 p.m. followed by military rites at the funeral home. The family will then receive friends until 7:00 p.m. and The Eagles Lodge will then have their memorial service.
Memorials contributions may be made to the funeral home to help offset the cost of services.
