Josephine Sara (Rohrbacher) Neff age 85, died 10:05 p.m., Friday, July 14, 2017 at Lima Memorial. She was born on January 23, 1932 at home, in Lima, to Albert Levi and Chloe (Evick) Rohrbacher who preceded her in death. She graduated from Cridersville High School May 1950 as Salutatorian of her class.
Josephine worked in the office for almost a year at Lima Tank Depot and again during the 1953 summer vacation as secretary for Col. Elliott at Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio. She was encouraged to remain at that position, but she felt she was called by God to work with children as a teacher. She graduated from Bowling Green State University in 1955.
Josephine was hired during college to teach third grade at Roosevelt in Lima upon completion of graduation. During the summer, she took post graduate work at the University of Hawaii in Honolulu. Josephine finished the school year at Roosevelt School and received a message that Mr. Lappin wanted to talk to her at Shawnee. When she asked why he replied that she always taught with her door open. The other teachers said they were impressed because Miss Rohrbacher stressed Phonics and Math but felt 44 students was too large. He said they needed a good Phonics teacher in First Grade with only 25 students. She taught first grade for the next five years.
While teaching at Shawnee she met E. Lewis Neff and impressed by his Bible knowledge they were married on December 20, 1959. She resigned her job in 1962 to start a family.
When the children were old enough to start school. She accepted a position of first grade teacher at Spencerville Local. During that time, she pursued graduate studies at Bowling Green, Wright State and Xavier University. She received her master’s degree in Administration and Guidance from the University of Dayton. She retired after 30 years of teaching.
Josephine and her husband traveled to most of the USA and Canada, Mexico, Central America, Alaska, Australia, New Zealand, Europe, Holy Land, etc. They took yearly cruises to the Caribbean Islands.
Josephine was preceded in death by a twin son, Douglas Bruce Neff, two brothers: Clifford Rison and Charles Rohrbacher and a sister-in-law Laura Rison.
Survivors: sister Joy (Charles) Carr, brother Jay Rohrbacher, a sister-in-law Gwen Rohrbacher, two sons: Paul Edman (Tina) Neff and Steven Eric Neff; three granddaughters: Mariah, Morgan and Mackenzie Neff.
Josephine was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church, a life member of Ohio education Association, Allen County Retired Teacher, Delta Kappa Gamma, an honor society and Daughters of the American Revolution Jo also enjoyed floral and vegetable gardening and doing genealogy.
The family will receive friends 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., Tuesday at Bayliff & Son Funeral Home, Cridersville.
The funeral service will be 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, July 19 at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, burial will follow at Shawnee Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be given to St. Matthew Lutheran Church general fund.
