Eugene ‘Whitey’ Metzger, age 88 of Wapakoneta, died at 1:45 p.m., Tuesday, January 30, 2018 at St. Rita’s Medical Center. He was born November 3, 1929 to the late Alfred J. ‘Bud’ and Edna Tester Metzger. On April 7, 1956 he married Maris Yuteve Kirchner, who survives in Wapakoneta.

Mr. Metzger retired July 1991 as a foreman with Ametek Westchester Plastic in Wapak. As a young man he was a mechanic with his father and enjoyed hunting. He enlisted into the U.S. Naval Reserve and then joined the U.S. Air Force. He was a member of the V.F.W. Post 9289 of St. Marys. Whitey and his wife were champion roller skaters, skating 10 years in invitational meets, winning many 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place trophies. He also enjoyed camping, boating, and traveling with his family.

Also surviving is a daughter – Elisha (Bart) Smith of Wapakoneta; 2 grandchildren – Andrea (Martin) Brookhart and Emily Smith; a step sister – Mary Lou Luedeke of TN; 2 aunts – Betty Vogel of St. Marys; Wilma Tester of Wapakoneta; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He is preceded in death by a son – Kurt Alan Metzger who died November 9, 2012; an infant sister; a half brother – Max Metzger; and a step brother – Larry Kailus.

Funeral services will begin 10:00 a.m., Saturday, February 3, 2018 at Bayliff & Son Funeral Home, Cridersville. Rev. Becky Sunday will officiate. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery, Wapakoneta where military rites will be observed by V.F.W. Post 9289 of St. Marys.

The family will receive friends from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 – 8:00 p.m., Friday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Special Olympics or the choice of the donor.
