Lois A. Hinds, 94, of Lima passed away on Wednesday, January11, 2023 at Wyngate Senior Living Community. She departed this earth peacefully in the early morning hours while sleeping.
She was born on April 24, 1928, in Canton, Ohio to the late John and Rosemary (Best) Boerner. She married Henry H. Hinds at Trinity Methodist Church in Lima, Ohio on July 1, 1949. He preceded her in death December 1, 2013.
Lois was raised in Canton, OH and moved to Lima with her mother and sister following her father’s death. She had a love for music, especially the piano, and began playing for programs at age 9 and also started collecting sheet music at age 10. Sharing her musical talents, she sang in the church choir for years. Lois belonged to the Sweet Adelines, a musical group that performed locally in the 60’s. In addition, she sang with the choir and played the piano and organ at Perry United Methodist Church, and also played for services at churches in Florida while spending winters there. Lois also played piano for many parties, funerals and weddings.
For her 43rd birthday she asked for a bike and a new adventure began. The family biked together in the 70’s seeing 17 states. She was a life member of the American Youth Hostels (AYH) and spent many weekends biking or hiking with AYH. Overnight stays often were in campgrounds or hostels. Her home was always open to those traveling by bike. Visitors would camp in their yard and she would provide dinner and breakfast for them.
Her proudest bicycling accomplishment was when she completed the Midwest Double Century Bicycle Ride, riding 200 miles in under 24 hours.
Her hobbies included contributing articles, where she would write about the personal achievements on a local and regional basis, and also wrote several magazine and newsletter articles.
One of her fondest memories was performing in the play, “Cabaret” at the Encore Theater, where she performed as a piano player.
Being a Kindergarten Teacher’s Aide for Perry Schools was one of the happiest times of her life, making her feel appreciated and enjoyed seeing the students grow and develop. She spoke highly of the many children she encountered and especially seeing and chatting with them as they grew older.
After retirement, she also taught low impact water aerobics classes for over 20 years. She also performed with Belles and Beaus, a musical group that entertained at area senior living facilities for many years.
Survivors include a son David (Linda) Hinds of Lima, a daughter-in-law Chris Hinds of Lima, a daughter-in-law Mary Hinds of Lima, and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by: a daughter Barbara Hinds, sons John, Craig, and Phillip Hinds, a brother Jack Boerner, and a sister Edith Clum.
