Lucy Rachel Aufderhaar passed from her earthly to her heavenly home on the evening of September 2, 2013.
Born January 2, 1923 in Wilmore Kentucky to the Reverend Ada and Reverend Eugene Dickson, she was succeeded in life and later preceded in death by four siblings: Lloyd, Mary (Lagergren), Margaret (Johnson), and Florence. The family followed her father’s pastorate to Claremont, Wyoming and later Burdick, Kansas and ultimately Leonardville, Kansas.
Mrs. Aufderhaar’s teaching career began at 17 years of age. Having skipped a grade, she graduated early from high school, took normal training and taught one year at Monitor, a one-room school near Leonardville. She subsequently taught high school English, attending Asbury College in the summer, completing also some of her credits at Kansas State. Upon completion of her degree, she taught English at Boswell Junior High School in Topeka, Kansas, then ninth grade English at Highland Park High School. She and sisters Mary and Florence taught in Europe between 1950 and 1953, first in Ipswich at Bentwaters Air Force Base, then in Mannheim, Germany. She later served at Marimor School from 1973 through 1990, earning a certificate in special education concurrently.
Rachel met Albert Aufderhaar in the 1950’s during his travels for Westinghouse. They married October 11, 1959, residing in Wichita, where Eugene Lewis (Kathleen, Bluffton) and Margaret Susan Warder (David, Lima) were born. Following a brief residence in Seattle, Washington, the family settled permanently in Lima, Ohio, whereupon followed the birth of Carolyn (Cincinnati).
In her retirement, Rachel enjoyed walks in the woods, trips to Kansas and Virginia Beach and a return jaunt to Europe, all with husband Albert, who preceded her in death in 2002. In her later years she was surrounded by the company and care of her family.
Mrs. Aufderhaar had been a member of Shawnee United Methodist Church, then Unity Church of Lima, and presently Westside United Methodist Church. She was also a member of the Association for Research and Enlightenment based in Virginia Beach, Virginia.
She and family members are grateful to all who helped tend to her during her final years.
Funeral service will be 4:00 p.m., Friday September 6 at Bayliff & Son Funeral Home, Cridersville, friends may call 2 hours prior to the funeral. Memorial contributions may be made in Rachel’s name to Westside United Methodist Church, Lima, Ohio.
