Luther E. Metzger, Sr., age 87 of Harrod, died at 12:54 p.m., Tuesday, April 5, 2011 in Lima Memorial Health Care System. He was born August 18, 1923 in Duchouquet Township, Auglaize County, Ohio. He is the son of Grant and Ida Thomas Metzger. Both parents are deceased. On July 2, 1950 he married Patsy Hughes in St. Marks Lutheran Church in Clay Township, who survives.
Mr. Metzger was a retired machine operator with Mill Core of Lima and formerly had worked at UniSteel. He was a World War II U.S. Army Veteran, serving with the 17th Airborne Division Association. He was a life member of the V.F.W. of the United States and the 517th Parachute Combat Team. He was a member of the 82nd Airborne Division Association. He loved to square dance, attending the travel log in Wapakoneta, and he had farmed.
Survivors also include 3 sons – L. Gene (Linda) Metzger, Jr. of Portland, Oregon; Kenneth L. (Janet) Metzger of Harrod, and James E. (Daisy) Metzger; 9 grandchildren – Tina, Gina, Katie, Jacob, Brad, Chad, Gretchen, James, Jr. and caregivers – Janelle and husband Patrick; 14 great grandchildren – 1 step great grandson; 1 brother – Dean Metzger of Wapakoneta; and a sister Lucille Irwin of Riverside, California.
He was preceded in death by a brother – LeRoy Metzger and a sister – Cleo Roth.
Funeral services will begin 10:00 a.m., Saturday, April 9, 2011 at Bayliff & Son Funeral Home, Cridersville. The Rev. Jim Webb will officiate. Burial will follow in St. Matthew Cemetery near Cridersville. Military Rites will be observed by V.F.W. Post 8445 of Wapakoneta.
The family will receive friends from 2:00 – 4:00 and 6:00 – 8:00 p.m., Friday at the funeral home.
