Mabel Marie (Fantz) Lewis, 95, died Thursday, March 5, 2015 at 7:35 a.m., at Otterbein Cridersville Skilled Nursing Facility of complications following a broken hip. She was born July 27, 1919 in Hume, Ohio to Jacob and Odessa (Bowsher) Fantz, and graduated from Shawnee High School in 1937. On November 25, 1939 she married James O. Lewis.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Harold and Carlton Fantz, a sister, Catherine (Fantz) Lewis, her husband, and a son, Terry L. Lewis.
She is survived by a son, Larry Lewis of The Villages, Florida, a daughter-in-law, Margaret Lewis of Lima, Ohio, five grandchildren, Scott Lewis of Findlay, Ohio, Shari (Jon) Smith of Dayton, Ohio, Grant (Jennifer) Lewis of Pataskala, Ohio, Dwight (Shawna) Lewis of Lima, Ohio, Amanda (Jake) Dablemont of Columbia, Missouri, a foster daughter, Patti (Mike) Lenhart of Ada, Ohio, and nine great grandchildren.
Mabel was a homemaker who worked with her husband at the Lewis Grocery Store in Hume, and as a Methodist minister in McGuffy and Alger, Ohio. Her great loves in life were her family and her church. She was a lifetime member of the Hume United Methodist Church. Over the years she taught Sunday School, served on the Pastor-Parish Relations Committee, held several offices in the Hume Women’s Society, taught Bible School, played piano for services, organized a senior choir, and planned and directed many Easter sunrise services. In her community she was known for her pie baking skill, and children knew they would be given cookies if they knocked on her door. She was a loving and caring neighbor, and a faithful visitor to those who were sick or in need.
Funeral services will begin 10:30 a.m., Saturday, March 14, 2015 at Bayliff & Son Funeral Home, Cridersville. Rev. Larry Blunden will officiate. Burial will follow at St. Matthew’s Cemetery on Hume Road.
The family will receive friends from 9:00 – 10:30 a.m. Saturday, before the services.
