Marvel Elizabeth “Betty” (Whitmer) Gulcher, age 93, died on 15 November 2014 in Lima, Ohio, at the Wyngate Senior Living Community.
Betty was born 12 November 1921 in Youngstown, Ohio, to Albert Clifford Whitmer and Marvel Amelia Rachel Ann (Walklet) Whitmer. She moved with her parents to Nashville, Tennessee, for a couple of years, and finally to Columbus, Ohio, where she grew up. She graduated South High School in 1939 and Capital University Business School in 1940. She became the youngest Secretary for a Savings and Loan when she worked at South High Savings and Loan in Columbus.
Betty married Alban Frederick Gulcher on 29 July 1944 in Columbus, Ohio, just before Alban was shipped to Italy with the Army Corp of Engineers during WWII. After Alban returned, they had two children, Karen and Kenneth. Besides Columbus, they also lived in Homer, Ohio; Columbus, Ohio, again; Bryan, Ohio; Angola, Indiana; Columbus, Ohio, again; Gallipolis, Ohio; and Lakeland, Florida, before moving to Lima, Ohio in 1989 where they moved to be near their daughter and family.
Betty was a Welcome Wagon hostess in Hillard, Ohio, sold Beauty Counselor cosmetics, did data entry at Dwight Spencer in Grandview, Ohio, and prepared taxes in Gallipolis, Ohio.
Betty liked to bowl in her younger years in Columbus and Gallipolis, but her passion was bridge. She played bridge wherever she lived and even drove from Lima to Columbus to play in a Bridge Club she had been in for years. She was in charge of a Senior Citizen bridge group for over 25 years that met at the Senior Citizens Center and later at the Barr Hotel in Lima.
She was a member of the First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Lima, Ohio, and the Mother Church in Boston, Massachusetts. Alban and Betty were Readers for the Christian Science Church for two years in the 1990s.
Betty was active in the Lima Watercolor Society for many years and painted many watercolors. She also was a member of the Swim Club at the old Holiday Inn/Howard Johnson Motel. Over the years, Betty knitted and crocheted many items for her family – hats, mittens, scarves, and afghans. She loved to listen to the radio and watch TV game shows.
Betty is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Alban, (27 July 1997), and her son Kenneth Alban Gulcher (12 October 1968).
She is survived by her daughter, Karen (David) Jones of Lima, Ohio; three grandchildren: Douglas (Melissa) Jones of Chester, Virginia; Coleen (Todd) Peterson of Spanish Fork, Utah; and Duane (Sally) Jones of Marion, Ohio; and six great-grandchildren: Jessica Jones, Matthew and Rachel Peterson, and Ruth, Hope, and Daniel Jones.
A Memorial Service will be held at Baliff and Son in Cridersville on Thursday, November 20, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. Visitation will be one hour before the Memorial Service. She will be cremated and the remains buried next to her husband’s remains at the Memorial Park Cemetery in Lima, Ohio.
