Melvin graduated from Cridersville High School in 1950. He and a friend, Jack Davis, headed for Alaska in a 1940 Ford that his dad said wouldn’t make it out of town. Ten days later they arrived in Anchorage. They worked different jobs while there, one was working on the Alaskan Railroad. They returned six months later. He then went to work on the Great Lakes, hauling Iron oar. He then went to work on an Esso Standard Oil Super Tanker as an oiler, hauling product from New York to Aruba. He put in over a million miles on the ocean while working for Esso. He later began working for Schwerman Trucking Co. and remained there until they closed the Lima Terminal. He then worked for Roeder Cartage where he won several Driver of the month awards. In 1990 the Ohio Trucking Association named him one of the year’s 12 Drivers of the month. In 35 years of driving truck, he never had a speeding ticket, safety violation, citation of any sort or was at fault in any accident. He retired in 1995. He had served as an usher at the Lima Baptist Temple for 34 years. He enjoyed helping struggling young families by buying groceries for them. He supported “Smile Train” which provides corrective surgery for children born with deformities. He was a member of Bluelick Bible Church.
