Melvin G. “Mel” Kaehler, age 87, of Lima passed away Tuesday, July 31, 2018 at St. Rita’s Medical Center. He was born Jan. 19, 1931 in Wapak to the late George Carl Augustus and Carrie Zwiebel Kaehler. He married Colleen B. Fite July 14, 1950 in Montra, Ohio, who survives.
Additional survivors include children: Randy (Lois) Kaehler of Lakeview, Cheryl (Steve Burden) Seitz of Wapak and Curtis (Eliza) Kaehler of Lima, 9 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren and 5 great great grandchildren and a sister Marybelle (Roger) Dixon of Spencerville and 3 nieces.
Mel served his country in the Marine Corp during the Korean War. He had a life long business with his partner Marvin Zwiebel know as K & Z Builders. He was a member of the Civil Air Patrol , retiring as a Major and was a member of Am Vets Post 39 Lakeview. Mel attained his Master Gardener degree and was instrumental in constructing the Children’s Garden at the Allen County Museum. He enjoyed spending time with his family, gardening and his cats.
The family will have a gathering Saturday, August 4th 2-4 and 6-7:30 p.m. at Bayliff & Son Funeral Home, Cridersville. A time of sharing will begin at 7:30. Memorial contributions may be made to The Children’s Garden Endowment Fund P.O. Box 521, Lima 45802.
