Obituary

Richard Arlen Schmenk, 81, died at 6:35 p.m., June 2, 2011 at his home. He was born August 22, 1929 in Lima, to Ernest Frank and Arietta Mary Decker Schmenk. He married Phyllis Ilene Foust on June 5, 1948, who preceded him in death, April 1, 2009. They had been married for 61 years.
Richard attended Lima Central High School where he held the record of 10.5 seconds for the hundred yard dash. He was an Eagle Scout and an usher at Pop Warner’s Ohio Theatre. He went to work at an early age for Lima Electric Motors. In 1957 he went to work for Ford Motor Company where he retired in December of 1989 after 32 1/2 years of service. While at Ford, Richard, better known, as “Rich” or “Dick” turned in numerous ideas that he benefitted from , but never turned in an idea that would put a fellow employee out of work. Rich took electrical courses at home which came in handy when he built his first home. He loved putting things together. Building ships and remote controlled airplanes. He even designed and built a flying saucer that actually flew. He was an artist, painting on glass and designing jet planes before their time. Rich was a real family man. He loved taking pictures and home movies, and had a developing room where he enlarged and developed pictures for many people. He took pictures of his only sisters wedding and later surprised her with an album of her wedding. He was an avid bowler, ice skater, and had a real love for sports. After moving his family to Elida in the late fifties, he teamed up with Dick Prince and helped coach Elida baseball. In the summer the two coached pony league baseball where they won the championship. Richard and his wife then became active members of the Elida Athletic Boosters club, where they were instrumental in raising a lot of money for the club, and building a new concession stand. He also was the person who came up with the idea to paint the football field, which lead to other schools doing the same. They also were instrumental in getting the field house built and running the concession stands. In his later years, Dick, Phyllis and daughter were regulars at the YMCA, where he became known by employees as their official greeter, because he would talk to everyone that came through the front door. Richard was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend to all. He will be greatly missed.
Survivors include six children Sandra Collar, Richard “Rick” (Dorothy) Schmenk, Beverly Volen, and Debbie (Dan) Kirian all of Elida, Denise (Nathan) Fogt of Defiance, Ohio and Teresa Schmenk of Morristown, New Jersey; 14 grand children; and 16 great grandchildren; 2 brothers: Roger (Loretta) Schmenkof Fort Worth, TX and Jeffery (Jane) Schmenk of Waterville, a sister Susie (Don) Bott and a sister-in-law Melba Schmenk all of Lima.
He was preceded in death by 2 brothers: James (Marcella) Schmenk and Mickey Schmenk.
