Obituary

Roger E. Mathews, age 87 of Lima, died at 1:26 a.m., Wednesday, June 22, 2011 in Lima Memorial Health Systems, Lima. He was born April 12, 1924 in Lima, Ohio. He is the son of Ross U. and Esther Foulke Mathews. Both parents are deceased. On November 19, 1942 he married Betty Bernadine Stoner, who died January 14, 2007.

Survivors include 3 children – Sandra Dunlap of Lima; Mike (Barbara) Mathews of Harrod; Mark (Mary) Mathews of Waynesfield; 7 grandchildren; and 5 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son – Clark Mathews who died in 1998; a brother and a sister.

Mr. Mathews was a retired farmer and had worked on the railroad with Nichol Plate and Norfolk and Western Railway. Getting together with other railroad retirees was always a good time. He was a World War II U.S. Army Veteran as a Technician 5th grade with Company B 56th Armored Engineers Battalion. He was a member of the Perry Township Historical Society. His pleasures were hunting, fishing, reading, working on crossword puzzles, and tinkering outside in the shed.

Funeral services will begin 10:00 a.m., Friday, June 24, 2011 at Bayliff & Son Funeral Home, Cridersville. Rev. Don Smith will officiate. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery, Lima. Military rites will be observed by the V.F.W. Post 8445 of Wapakoneta.

The family will receive friends from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m., Thursday, June 23, 2011 and one hour prior to services Friday at the funeral home.
