Vernon A. Archer, age 90 of New Bremen and formerly of Wapakoneta, died at 3:37 p.m., Wednesday, October 26, 2016 at Elmwood Assisted Living, New Bremen. He was born August 7, 1926 in Uniopolis, Auglaize County, Ohio; to the late Ferdinand and Velma Gearhart Archer. On July 3, 1947 he married Marilyn Jean Spyker Archer, who died April 11, 1992. He then married Linda L. Tunks Turner, who died September 2, 2015.
He retired after 36 years from Standard Oil, was a member of Westview United Methodist Church of Cridersville and enjoyed history. Vernon was a medic in the U.S. Navy. He was active in the Lions, Historical Society, and the American Legion Post all of Cridersville.
He is survived by 4 daughters – Susan (Terry) Phillips of New Carlisle, OH; Cathy (Gene, died February 2013) Tester of Wapakoneta; Karen (Ken) Slattery of Beavercreek, OH; Denise (Ron) Maidon of Cridersville; 8 grandchildren – Jenny (Rick) Axe, Kristi (Damon Martin) Tester, Joshua (Jennifer) Tester, Eric (Tonia) Rhodes, Matthew (Megan) Slattery, Michelle (Matthew) Stanley, Heather (Larry) Fischer, and Scott (Liz) Phillips ; 11 great grandchildren – Dillon Axe, Chelsea Slattery, Kayli Slattery, Ben Fischer, Alex Fischer, Christopher Phillips, Camden Tester, Olivia Tester, Sadie Rhodes, Eli Rhodes, and Silas Rhodes; 3 step sons – Rick (Gina) Turner of Wapakoneta; Walter (Anne) Turner II of Wapakoneta; Scott (Traci) Turner of Wapakoneta; a step daughter – Roxanne (Rick) Dailey of Cridersville; 7 step grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his brothers – Melyn Archer, Leonard Archer, Marion Archer, Norman Archer, Earl Harrison; his sisters – Margarite Archer Hector, and Evelyn Archer Rehn, and a brother-in-law – Dale Spyker.
The family will receive friends from 3:00 – 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, November 1, 2016 at Bayliff & Son Funeral Home, Cridersville. Private graveside services will be at a later date in St. Matthew Cemetery.
