Obituary

Wayne E. Arnold, age 77, died in his Cridersville, Ohio home on January 26, 2016. He was born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on June 21, 1938 to Frank E. and A. Zeta (Taylor) Arnold. At age eight he moved with his family to a farm east of Harlan, Iowa where he grew up, big brother to sister Carolyn Lush of Omaha, Nebraska.

He graduated from Harlan High School with the class of 1956 and then attended and graduated from Iowa State University with a Bachelor of Science in agronomy in 1961. Wayne returned to the Harlan farm, when after a few years he, together with his father, purchased one half of the 480 acre property from his uncle and began what became a 40 year career in livestock farming.

Wayne was married to Darlene M. Nelsen of Shelby, Iowa on September 8, 1957, who survives. Together they welcomed three children into their lives: Pamela K. (Bob) Harmsen, now deceased; Brian E. (JoAnne) of Upper Sandusky, Ohio; and Penny S. (Jeff) Bushaw, also deceased; 5 grandchildren – B.J. (Iza) Jurczik-Arnold; Jeanine (Mark) Lewis, Jesse Arnold, Lance (Denice) Bushaw, and Shane Bushaw; 8 great grandchildren – Dylan, Gabriella, Julianna, Olaf, Mia, Emily, Madison, and Chloe.

In the early years of farming, Wayne served as a member of the Iowa State University Shelby County Extension Council where he learned about the opportunity to host farm trainees from countries around the world. He delighted in teaching young men and women about best practices of beef and hog production. He and Darlene hosted trainees for 28 years.

As a young man he also served as a 4-H Leader and as a Farm Bureau Board Member and officer. He also served in several church offices, earlier at First United Methodist, Harlan, Iowa and later, after retiring to Ohio, at Salem United Methodist in Wapakoneta.

Before Wayne left Iowa, he studied to become an Enrolled agent for H&R Block serving as a enrolled agent in Iowa, Ohio and Florida over a 12 year period.

Funeral services will begin 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, February 3, 2016 at Salem United Methodist Church, Wapakoneta, Ohio. Rev. John Foster will officiate. The family will receive friends from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m., Wednesday at the church.
